The moment was an emotional one for Max and Stephanie of Days of Our Lives (NBC) – It was the very first time that Max professed his love for Stephanie. To create the perfect romantic environment for this important memory, he got a bottle of wine and turned on the jukebox. The exact right song began filling the air, one that illustrated the beauty and intensity of the occasion as none other really would be able to. That song was, “Right Here,” by Days of Our Lives regular songwriter Jd Webb.
Together with D. Brent Nelson, the show’s music supervisor, Webb composes the majority of the daytime drama’s original songs, and sings the majority of the vocals, as well. “Brent will call me and be, like, OK – we have a scene coming up where this happens, it needs to have this feeling. Or sometimes we’ll be going for a certain style. But either way, we really try to write varied songs to set the mood and feeling of the show, but which are still strong pieces that stand on their own as songs.”
It isn’t hard to see that this attempt has been a utter success. As his tracks have gained popularity in Days of Our Lives, emails have poured in to his myspace profile and to the Days of Our Lives website, from viewers wanting to know how they can purchase the tracks for their own use. In fact, two different times with the airing of tracks that especially spoke to the public, the Days of Our Lives music site was actually taken down by the amount of users clicking in and trying to download the tracks.
“What’s really cool is when one of the songs becomes the theme songs for one of the couples, it’s like ‘their’ song,” says Webb, “Then, it’s like, it plays every time they have a significant scene or when they’re kissing, and it really becomes entwined in peoples’ minds with the story of those two characters.”
Well, there’s one thing that’s for sure – by giving his talent to NBC, Jd has caused his music to become part of more than only the soundtrack of Days of Our Lives, it has also become part of the soundtrack of peoples’ real lives.
